Birthday parties are one of those occasions where you want your child to look a little more dressed up, but not so dressed up that they can't actually enjoy themselves.
Because a four-year-old at a birthday party is probably going to run around, climb on things, eat cake with their hands and come home with at least one mysterious stain on their clothes.
So the goal isn't really to find the smartest outfit in the wardrobe.
It's to find something that looks good, feels comfortable and still lets them run around and have fun.
Start with the kind of party
Not every birthday party calls for the same outfit.
A small gathering at home is very different from a party at a restaurant, a play area or someone's garden. And if there's a swimming pool, a soft-play centre or a lot of outdoor games involved, comfort becomes even more important.
For a relaxed party, a comfortable T-shirt and shorts can be more than enough.
If it's a slightly dressier celebration, a polo paired with smart shorts or trousers can make the outfit feel a little more special without going overboard.
The easiest way to decide is to think about what your child will actually be doing once they get there.
Comfort comes before looking “dressed up”
It's tempting to choose the outfit that looks the cutest in the cupboard.
But if your child spends the entire party pulling at an uncomfortable collar or complaining that their trousers are too tight, neither of you is going to enjoy it.
Look for soft fabrics, comfortable waistbands and clothes that allow plenty of movement.

This is probably our favourite rule at Tiny Atelier.
Don't buy an outfit that only works for one birthday party.
A good polo should work for a birthday party, a family lunch and a holiday dinner.
A pair of smart shorts shouldn't have to wait for a special occasion before they're allowed out of the wardrobe.
And a comfortable T-shirt can be dressed up with the right pair of shorts or trousers without becoming a completely different outfit.
